Capitals Trades Affecting the Bears

The Capitals made a couple trades last night that will affect the way the Bears' lineup looks for the rest of the season. The first trade was a minor one for the Caps, but it affected the Bears the most. Washington traded Chris Brown to the New York Rangers for Ryan Bourque (Chris Bourque's brother). This season, Brown played 1 game for the Caps and 20 games for the Bears. In those 20 games, he had 9 points (3 goals, 6 assists). Brown played in 96 regular season and 9 playoff games for the Bears since the 2013-14 season. Ryan Bourque has played in 56 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack this season, with 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) to his credit. He has played in 325 regular season AHL games and 1 NHL game (with the Rangers).

The second trade was a bigger one for the Caps, but still affected the Bears' lineup. Washington traded Brooks Laich, Connor Carrick, and a second-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Daniel Winnik and a fifth-round pick. Brooks Laich had been the Caps' longest tenured player before this trade. Laich played 10 regular season and 21 playoff games for the Bears in the 2005-06 season. Carrick had played 47 games for the Bears this season, with 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) to his credit. In total, he had played in 133 regular season and 10 playoff games for the Bears, with 37 regular season games in the NHL (all with the Capitals).

Recap

With the events of today's games, the Bears are in the top spot of the Atlantic Division! Dan Ellis is continuing to prove why he deserves to be the number one goaltender on the team. The 1st period was filled with some interesting calls by the referees, but none of that stopped the Bears from scoring with 1:08 left in the period. Nathan Walker scored his 13th of the season, from Scott Gomez & Riley Barber. After the 1st, the Bears had the 10-8 shot advantage.

In the 2nd, the scoring would increase by a substantial amount for the Bears. It would start off quick, as the Bears would make it 2-0 52 seconds in. Travis Boyd scored his 18th of the season, from Jakub Vrana & Chris Bourque. A fight would occur just a couple minutes after between Utica's Brandon Prust & Hershey's Tyler Lewington. After some interesting calls, the Bears would be on the penalty kill. The Comets would score on that power play to make it 2-1 (12:09 mark). Alexandre Grenier scored his 10th of the season, from Ronalds Kenins & Taylor Fedun. Only 51 seconds later, the Bears would get the two-goal lead back. Riley Barber scored his 19th of the season, from Nathan Walker (2nd point of night) & Connor Carrick. Right before the end of the period, Hershey would make it 4-1. Chris Bourque scored his 24th of the season (2nd point of night), from Jakub Vrana (2nd assist of night) & Travis Boyd (2nd point of night). After the 2nd, the Bears had the 23-18 shot advantage.

In the 3rd, the scoring would slow down as the Bears played more of a possession game to wind down the clock. At the 2:55 mark, a fight would occur between Utica's Joseph LaBate & Hershey's Garrett Mitchell. The scoring would finish at the 10:45 mark, as the Bears would get a shorthanded goal to make it 5-1. Zach Sill scored his 4th of the season. Dan Ellis finished with 32 saves on 33 shots (Hershey finished with 34 shots).

A good bounce-back victory after the struggles of Sunday. The Bears came out with more purpose in this one, and it showed. In the 1st, the Bears would start off quick with one on the board 4:50 in. Nathan Walker scored his 12th of the season, from Scott Gomez & Tyler Lewington. Each team would get chances on the power play, but nothing would come of them. After the 1st, the Bears had the 11-9 shot advantage.

In the 2nd, the scoring would pick up quickly. 36 seconds in, on a power play from a penalty called at the end of the 1st, Hershey made it 2-0. Travis Boyd scored his 17th of the season, from Riley Barber & Jakub Vrana. A little more than two minutes later, the Bears would make it 3-0 on a penalty shot. Riley Barber scored his 18th of the season (2nd point of night). At the 8:45 mark, the Penguins would get on the board. Carter Rowney scored his 13th of the season, from Tom Kostopoulos & Sahir Gill. Recap

This was one of the strangest games I've ever blogged. Binghamton has struggled this season, but this was a complete meltdown. The 1st period was an exciting one with penalties and goals galore. It all started very quickly, as two seconds into the game, there was a fight between Hershey's Liam O'Brien & Binghamton's Guillaume Lepine. 3:36 into the period, the Bears got on the board first. Jakub Vrana scored his 5th of the season, from Joey Leach. Towards the middle of the period, the Senators would tie the game up. Chris Carlisle scored his 3rd of the season, from Michael Kostka & Eric O'Dell. At the 15:21 mark, the Bears would take the lead back on the power play. Christian Djoos scored his 6th of the season, from Chandler Stephenson & Aaron Ness. After the 1st, the Senators had the 8-7 shot advantage.

This is where the meltdown happened. In this period, the Senators had 10 penalties (25 minutes), and it led to most of the period being dominated by Bears' power plays. Towards the beginning of all the penalties (8:31 mark), the Bears got a power play goal to make it 3-1. Riley Barber scored his 13th of the season, from Chris Bourque & Scott Gomez. The Senators would fall apart at the 13:32 mark, as their captain (Zach Stortini) would be called for 9 minutes worth of penalties, including a fight against Hershey's Zach Sill. During a 5-on-3 power play a bit later (17:22 mark), the Bears made it 4-1. Riley Barber scored his 2nd of the day (14th of season), from Chris Bourque (2nd assist of day) & Travis Boyd. After the hectic 2nd period, the Bears had the 20-13 shot advantage.

In the 3rd period, the remaining penalties on the Senators would give the Bears another power play goal 1:12 in. Scott Gomez scored his 3rd of the season (2nd point of day), from Chris Bourque (3rd assist of day) & Jakub Vrana (2nd point of day). During what seemed to be the first 5-on-5 play in hours (4:16 mark), Hershey made it 6-1. Nathan Walker scored his 10th of the season, from Scott Gomez (2nd assist/3rd point of day) & Riley Barber (3rd point of day). Hershey finished with the 30-18 shot advantage.
